This is an excellent book and answers a lot of questions for writers, editors, and proofreaders. The one thing I don't understand is why the author didn't include information about pronouns when she described the parts of speech. There are eight parts of speech and she left out pronouns and interjections. Aside from that, it's a very useful reference.
“The best punctuation book, period†by June Casagrande has as a subtitle “A Comprehensive Guide for Every Writer, Editor, Student, and Businessperson.†I underscore “comprehensive†because the author does, indeed, (properly placed commas?) show how punctuation varies among style guides such as the Chicago Manual of Style, New York Times and others. Which one is correct? Casagrande says, It depends on your style guide. Here is the goal that Casagrande presents for her excellent book.From the book’s Introduction:This book attempts to provide answers for users in every punctuation situation in any of four major styles: book style, as reflected by The Chicago Manual of Style and its designated dictionary Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate; news style, as indicated by Associated Press Stylebook and its designated dictionary, Webster’s New World College Dictionary; science style, as influenced by the American Psychological Association and its preferred dictionary, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate; and academic style, as outlined by the Modern Language Association, which does not designate a dictionary.I found this book helpful for understanding how punctuation varies among publications. Also, I am encouraged to not be open to the flexibility of the English style and usage.
This is the first grammar book I enjoy picking up just to browse. It's full of unexpected surprises that'll brighten and clarify everyone's writing. The book breaks down each challenge into all the prevailing styles: book editing, news media and business, science, and academic style recommended for college papers and academic articles.So if you're confused about whether "half dollar" is preferable to "half-dollar," you'll see that "half dollar" has both the circled "B" (books) and "N" (news); and that "half-dollar" is the usage you'd find in "S" (science).Besides that, it's just fun.Part II is "Punctuation A-Z" and provides a board game sort of appeal that allow aficionados to test themselves and one another with playful challenges.There's hundreds of simple entries like "airhead, airheaded," and their preferred uses. Need super heroic help? Check out the spelling of "Batman," "Superman, supermen," or "superhero." And that's "for Pete's sake."And many of the listings are just like that. Uncluttered spellings and the formats for which each is preferred.The comprehensive listing also includes a salty mix of handy profanities that'll leave stuffier grammar guides huffing, "WTF?"The book belongs on every desk of every writing discipline.One quibble: It's mistitled.The book shouldn't be called, "The best punctuation book, period." This is a very useful book. Each chapter focuses on one type of punctuation. The back has a handy index that allows you to look up grammar rules quickly. It also tells you how the rules vary by type of writing: for book editing, new media and business writing, science style, and academic style.
This book has helped me with writing a story. I know you can find most everything online, but tire of always doing the searches and then having to weed out the bad results.
A handy reference: easy to search and consult on a particular question; fun to read out of curiosity or boredom; delightful to know which rule you're willfully violating. Bottom line here is that if you're not trampling somebody's rule for punctuation or spelling, than you're not writing English. This book will show you who's group you're offending at least on the punctuation side of things.
Fantastic book. Very well laid out and the rules are very easy to read and understand. Has every instance of punctuation you could possibly come across. This would be a great book for any high schooler, college student, or teacher for that matter to have in their library to use for reference.
