How to Build a Car

The world's foremost designer in Formula One, Adrian Newey OBE is arguably one of Britain's greatest engineers and this is his fascinating, powerful memoir.

How to Build a Car explores the story of Adrian's unrivalled 35-year career in Formula One through the prism of the cars he has designed, the drivers he has worked alongside and the races in which he's been involved.

A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrian's thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form - he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays. From his early career in IndyCar racing and on to his unparalleled success in Formula One, we learn in comprehensive, engaging and highly entertaining detail how a car actually works. Adrian has designed for the likes of Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, always with a shark-like purity of purpose: to make the car go faster. And while his career has been marked by unbelievable triumphs, there have also been deep tragedies: most notably Ayrton Senna's death during his time at Williams in 1994.

How to Build a Car encapsulates, through Adrian's remarkable life story, precisely what makes Formula One so thrilling - its potential for the total synchronicity of man and machine, the perfect combination of style, efficiency and speed.

Awesome read for anyone who is an F1 fan, racing enthusiast, or engineer. I’ve been an avid Formula 1 spectator for years but I’ve never been able to gain much of an appreciation for what goes on back at the factories as far as vehicle development, beyond what you hear from the race weekend commentators. Adrian gives a fantastic account of his career in F1, with a large focus on the specific technical challenges and solutions season-by-season. He provides insight into some of the politics of racing, while not belaboring the topic. All of this is delivered in a conversational, easy-to-read book with authentic illustrations and digestible technical stories. Really fun read; makes me want to sit down and have a beer with the guy.

Adrian does a great job of keeping the chapters short and the thoughts concise, He doesn't get long winded he just sticks to the points and the story moves effortlessly from his beginnings in university all the way through current day, never getting boring or dull. He also has done a good job of including technical drawings to illustrate the design features he is talking about at any given time, which is very helpful to the reader. All in all a great book, i found it to be even better than Ross Brawn's which i though was great as well. Adrian's book is more about the cars than the management, which i loved.

For me auto racing has always been about the car, not the driver. That's why they call it "auto" racing. I really appreciated the look into the technical aspects of race car design and being able to follow the steps of Adrian's career. I found the technical descriptions very informative and the team interactions interesting. There is of course much more engineering that goes into a race car than just aerodynamics, but Adrian was able to demonstrate how all systems are influenced by the car designer to get the most performance from the car on the track. I particularly appreciated the inside story on the circumstances of Senna's crash at Imola that took his life. Details that I had not heard before. If you love looking at every detail of how a race car is built you can't go wrong with this book by Adrian Newey.

Overall - beautiful. Adrian is the Man. There is hard work. There are jokes through the book. There is business. There is everything that needed to take a mission and complete it, going into uncertainty, and discovering & inventing on the way. He made history.Unexpected - drawings are not state of the art. He is engineer, not painter. I just got surprised by that. Expected something like Giorgio Piola does, but as black & white sketches... Expeienced kind of doodles.I will recommend it for R&D chaps in Software industry. I see huge commonality in approach and methods.

Thank You Adrian. I'm a harsh critic and have been disappointed by similarly targetted recent books bearing like names like Brawn and Forgheiri. Yours on the other hand rises to the level of one bearing the name of Donohue.Potential readers! Do it - read this book. You'll find lots of descriptions of the development of the aero of his successive designs, but plenty of Everything else too. Best chuckle is something he overheard one day at his local kart track.I was surprised to find in the acknowledgments his thanks to his ghost writer - up to that point I'd been sure he penned it himself as the writing is very first person and gracious. Thank You too then Andrew Holmes. Of the editing I have but a single criticism - I noticed an "a" missing somewhere. :)

I love F1 and have an interest in the engineering side of the sport, however I am not an engineer. This book had me enthralled from the moment I picked it it. In fact I got yelled at several times on Christmas day for having my nose in it rather than spending time with loved ones! The stories of the technical challenges faced and how they were overcome were fascinating and really help you understand how/why F1 is so aero reliant today. Also, many great insights into team politics and inner workings (wish there were even more of those). All in all a great book and a MUCH easier read that I thought it was going to be.

The life of Newey written by a ghost writer. Very, very few sketches of race car components. No pictures. A light read, but no substance for the true gearheads among you. Nothing about really building a race car.

A frank and open look at the world of Formula One. Written with a good sense of humour and personal honesty. Newey makes the complex theories of aerodynamics and engineering understandable while weaving a story that keeps you turning the pages. It's mostly a story about people in quite extraordinary circumstances. I especially liked the "behind the scenes" aspects. If you are a motor racing fan - as I am -, you'll love it. But I suspect that even if you're not this is a great read. Five stars for the well written and engaging story of a boy who persevered and made his dream come true!
